Phillies Batting Practice

This year has been kind of slow in the Spring but that has allowed lots of family time. Thanks to a good friend, Scott, I have been connected to a great guy that works for the Phillies. He totally hooked me up with a huge favor and treated Andrew and I to watch Phillies batting practice from behind home plate. I don’t think Andrew’s mouth ever closed and I was excited as well.

The boys apparently checking out a bat…

The wide view…

Not a Phillie, but one of the greatest hitters of all time…

My future major leaguer! Or if he becomes what he wants to be, a sports photographer!

Best of 2009 Results – Part 3 THE WINNER

And…drum roll please…the winner is Bridget and Jeramie! With a ridiculous percentage of the votes, almost 30%! They ran away with the voting and thanks to the rain on their wedding day that made this image possible! Thanks again to everyone that voted, all my amazing couples from 2009! I am looking forward to 2010 even more now!

Best of 2009 Results – Part 2

So, part two of the contest! Third place goes to Heather and Mark. It was a hot and humid day, but the girls cooperated and had a great time working with my vision of this image.

Second place, is a great look that is well-deserved of second place, Kelly and Brian. While this was during the first dance, they had this look for each other all day long. I enjoyed catching those little glances as the day went on!

Best of 2009 Results – Part 1

I can’t believe the number of people who visited my first Best Of contest! There were over 60o votes over the few weeks of the contest and there were some clear favorites! So, first, thank you to all that voted and encouraged others to vote.  I personally feel every image was a favorite of mine from the year, and there are many more coming with the 2009 Best Of Slideshow in the next week.

As for the contest winners, I am going to drag this out over today and tomorrow! First up, I am creating a fourth place prize, a $50 Visa Gift Card, because there was only ONE vote between fourth and third place! I couldn’t believe that with over 600 votes it came down to ONE vote for this.

So, fourth place, a really fun couple and moment from their wedding (for me at least) is from Meghan and Luke’s wedding. Thanks Meghan and Luke for trusting me to take you into a bathroom to take this image!

Next up, tomorrow morning, is second and third place, then the grand prize winner will be announced tomorrow evening!

My favorite from my childhood

I am rereading a great book, God Is at Eye Level, by Jan Phillips. It is a great book about how photography is an emotional process and sometimes a healing art. It has helped me become a photographer of moments at weddings. I am always looking for those moments between the couple, with family, and family. After I had mastered the art of classic portraiture and getting those all important family portraits it has been this book that helped me become who I am as a wedding photographer.

In the first chapter of the book it has the reader try and recall what photography meant as a child. There are two distinctive memories I have about photography. The first is going to the picture drawer in my parents room. In their desk, the second drawer on the left, was the picture drawer. It had pictures jammed into the drawer as well as a large box of pictures of the family and our trips. I would spend hours just looking through the images and remembering, or being told, what was going on in the image.

One image that is also one of my best memories, is this picture.

It is me and if I remember right it was taken at a lake in Michigan, close to where I was born in Elmhurst, Illinois. My dad took it and the large print of it hung next to his dresser in his room. I always loved looking at it, and of course being competitive that it was me and not my brothers. When my dad passed away I asked my mom if I could have it, and she agreed. When our youngest son, Daniel, was about the same age as I was in the image, he insisted that it was a picture of him.

So those are two memories as a child that has made me into the photographer I am today. What is your favorite picture as a child? How did images impact you when you were growing up?
