Well, it was with delight that I dragged my son with me to The Camera Shop in Bryn Mawr, PA last Friday to get my new 5D Mark II. A lot has been said about this camera with the HD video capability, etc etc. I am not a technical reviewer by any means, but a portrait and wedding photographer that uses tools to take images. As long as the piece of metal in my hands can do what I need it to do I am happy. The extra megapixels is important for me in some of the shoots I do, so I decided on this camera over the much more expensive 1Ds Mark III.
So this morning I had a willing friend have me shoot some shots of her and their little girl Sarah. I had played with the camera over the weekend with the kiddos and felt confident with it when it really counts with a client…well not a “real” client, but close enough.
I shot RAW + Large JPG images, setup a simple light of a 580 in a softbox, and clicked away. It isn’t the 1D series in terms of speed (I also use a 1D Mark III) but is, in my opinion, MUCH more crisp in responsiveness than the original 5D. If you have used a 40D you will recognize the feeling of the shutter as well as the sound. To me the original operation was kinda like a chunk chunk feeling, the new 5D is more like click click. Focus was better than the original and I feel confident that I will miss less with it compared to the original.
The main reason I got the 1D Mark III is to never again miss an important quick moment at a wedding. Now I think I am about equal in what I can do with this and the Mark III. Email me any questions about the camera and I’d be happy to give my opinion. Until I can process the RAW images here is one from the weekend with my willing volunteer…
ISO 6400 cropped a little, and converted to BW – this was a medium JPG, not RAW
